If you’ve not seen the book Cult Perfumes: The World’s Most Exclusive Perfumeries, you should definitely get your hands on it. Cult Perfumes, by Tessa Williams, is an exploratory book that details more than 25 different perfumeries around the world. Not only that, but you get to know the history of perfumes – how far back they can be found, as well as what they were made of, how they’re made, and who made them.
In this book you learn that perfume has not only been a huge part of the beauty world, but it’s been used to cure illnesses such as the Bubonic Plague as well as depression, headaches, and other mental and physical ailments.
Some of the perfumeries noted in this book are :
Diptyque (a Paris-based company who also makes candles)
Floris (England’s oldest perfumery – started in 1730! Also, the second oldest perfumery in the world.)
Jo Malone London (A brand that’s now owned by Estée Lauder but was started in an apartment by Jo Malone who aimed to bring new and uncomplicated fragrances out to the public. After starting a shop, her fragrances were noticed by high-profile celebrities and business took off. )
Santa Maria Novella (First founded in 1221 and then officially opened publically in 1612, they make Pot-Pourri, soaps, as well as perfumes.)
If you’re a big fan of perfumes, I would highly recommend this book to you. It’s a well-written, and in depth look at perfume and exclusive perfumeries.
Along with Cult Perfumes: The World’s Most Exlusive Perfumeries, Tessa has created candles based on the 4 elements: Fire, Water, Earth, and Air. You can find them in both London at Roullier White and now in the USA at Scent Bar in Los Angeles! 🙂
Fire is meant to be reminiscent of sitting by a fire in a log cabin. It has notes of Vetivert (a tall grass found in India and Tahiti), Tonka ( similar to vanilla), wood, Patchouli, Coconut, Vanilla caramel and hints of smoke.
Water was made to be invigorating and to heighten the senses. You’ll find notes of citrus, Jasmine, and floral notes. Sounds like my type of fragrance 🙂
Earth makes you think of walking trails and being outdoors. It has hints of Geranium, lemon and orange, pepper, Patchouli and Sandalwood, Cedar wood and leather.
Air reminds you of being on a tropical island because it’s citrus-y and invigorating. In this there are grapefruit scents, as well as ginger root, lemon grass, coriander seeds, and lemon peel.
Tessa is extremely passionate about both her book and her candles so if these sound like something you’d like, please support her by checking them out. 🙂
