Luminess Air : Airbrush Makeup System

Luminess Air

Using an airbrush makeup system is one of the best ways to get both an even and sanitary makeup application. Both professional makeup artists and professional photographers have been known to use airbrushed makeup on their clients.

This past month, I was able to try the Luminess Air : Legend Airbrush System and it was much different from my typical makeup routine!

Luminess Air Airbrush

How Does the Luminess Air Work?

The Luminess Air uses a constant air flow from a compressor. The air travels up a tube, through a needle inside the stylus and then comes out the end of the stylus. Foundation is squeezed into the stylus from a cup up top. (It doesn’t spray out unless you pull the trigger.) You use your finger to pull back the trigger on the stylus and the foundation is sprayed out evenly from its tip. Depending on how far back you pull the trigger, you get different amounts of product sprayed out.

How to Use the Luminess Air

  1. Shake up your foundation bottle.
  2. Hold the stylus like a pencil.
  3. Turn the compressor on.
  4. Squeeze 8 or more drops of foundation into the cup on top of the stylus.
  5. When you’re ready to use the airbrush, pull back the trigger and move your wrist in circular motions around your face.
  6. For more coverage, allow each coat of the foundation to dry and apply more.

How to Clean the Luminess Air

Here’s a video from Luminess Air explaining in-depth how to clean the airbrush system.

My Thoughts on the Luminess Air

I think the Luminess Air is fairly easy to use. It has decent coverage, but I wouldn’t say it has amazing coverage for acne prone skin. In my opinion, it would be best to use a concealer underneath if you tend to have spots. It does take a bit of practice to use but as long as your finger and wrist are loose, you won’t need to worry too much about using too much product at once. The main thing is to work in circular motions and not linger in one spotΒ  for too long so you don’t have caked makeup.

Because you’re able to control the amount of product that comes out of the machine, you don’t need to worry about getting your hair and eyes covered in foundation. You’re not going to be blasted with product like you would with hairspray or something similar. It’s a nice even mist of product.

I like that the system uses water-based makeup so my skin doesn’t feel gross and oily. I really hate that feeling when putting on makeup. I think that’s why I like a lot of matte formula products that use either clay or water based makeup.

What My Luminess Air Kit Included

Luminess Air Foundations

Luminess Air Matte foundation shades 1-4.

I chose to have the Matte airbrush foundations because I don’t really like having a shiny face. I received shades 1-4. Shade 1 seems to be great for my olive-toned skin – especially now that I’m slightly pale during the fall. I sometimes mix shades 1 and 2 together to create a different shade.

Primer, Brightening Glow, and Blush

Luminess Airbrush Moisturizer/Primer, which contains Vitamin E and olive extracts , Luminess Skin Brightening Glow, and Luminess Air Airbrush Blush : Tulip 3N

There are several different Luminess Air systems to choose from which range in price from $169-$399. You can find their systems in different places like Amazon as well as their website. Luminess Air has everything from skin products to eyeliners, as well as lipsticks and lip glosses.

I know what you mean. At first it seems like it would be daunting, but it’s not too complicated. To set up and only takes a minute and, in the end, you’re not using sponges or brushes that hold bacteria. If you get the chance to try one out, definitely do! It’s a whole different experience. πŸ™‚

Can this system be used with any foundation? Or do you have to purchase the brand that came with it?

As far as I know, you can’t because it voids the warranty on the machine but I have never tried using other products in it.

How cool! It looks so good and I can’t even imagine how much cleaner this is than the normal application. Its crazy how dirty makeup bags and products get. Great post! xo

Completely agree. I just went and washed all my makeup brushes and sponges and I was thinking how much that sucks to have to do. It’s so much more sanitary to use airbrush makeup.

I keep seeing people raving about this! Looks pretty cool! I feel like it would end up all over my hair, though. haha

HAHAHA! Ohh man. It actually doesn’t get all over your hair. I mean, I like to tie mine back, but it doesn’t come out in a huge clump or anything.

I wonder if you could use your favorite foundation with this system, rather than what the company sells. That would help sway me to the system, though it’s still rather expensive for my makeup purposes.

You know, I bet if your makeup was more on the liquid side then possibly but I think why their makeup looks more airbrushed is because it comes out as a fine mist that you can build up. It’s pretty watery but it dries pretty quickly
