I’m not going to say I’m an expert at sleeping but let’s just say if sleeping were a sport, I’d totally have a medal by now… 🙂 Napping/sleeping (when I’m able to) is a favorite pass time of mine. Here are some tips I use to be able to rest peacefully and incessantly through the night.
Start using your electronics in a better way.
A problem I often have is that I love playing with my phone at night. Because my brain works like a radio that’s on scan mode, it bounces from one idea to the next and doesn’t want to settle down. Whenever this happens, I open an app called “Sleepy Sounds” and let the sounds of streams or nature lull me to sleep. This app is perfect because it has different sounds for both adults and children and it’s extremely relaxing. 🙂 Instead of focusing on my troubles I picture myself in a meadow or by the ocean. One of my absolute favorites.
Cuddling releases a hormone called oxytocin which causes relaxation because it reduces stress and anxiety responses in your brain. So, next time you need to ease your mind, get your cuddle on. If you don’t have a significant other, you can always cuddle with your furry friends. 🙂 Pets have been shown to lower stress levels in people as well.
Buy some new bedding.
I can’t tell you how much bedding and other elements of your bed can do wonders for your sleep. On my bed I currently have a 4 inch mattress topper that feels like a cloud! I bought it for about $100 at my local home goods store and it’s been a huge asset for me. Not only is it comfortable, but I don’t have back issues when I’m sleeping on it. I have a pinched spine sometimes and I never have issues when I’m sleeping on my topper. It’s a cheaper alternative to buying a brand new mattress.
Another thing that is great is investing in a nice pillow and blankets/sheets. Before I really knew about thread counts, I had very cheap, rough sheets, blankets and pillow cases. My husband talked me into buying some better ones with a higher thread count and I wish I had done it sooner! I can’t tell you how extremely soft and comfortable my bedding is now. Think about how when you’re at a nice hotel, you get the best sleep of your life. The same can happen when you invest in some comfortable bedding.
Along with a great set of bedding I have a memory foam pillow that conforms to my neck. I’ve never been able to sleep with a flat pillow. I love having one that my head sinks into and that can align my body where it needs to be when I’m sleeping.
Adjust the temperature.
Whether you like it cold or warm in your room, set your thermostat to a comfortable temperature. If the air in your room feels too dry, you can add a humidifier which will make it easier to breathe at night.
Nothing can ruin sleep like a big glass of caffeinated soda. Instead of grabbing for that Mountain Dew you’ve been craving for, apt for a warm soothing hot chocolate or tea instead. Instead of being wide awake half the night, you’ll be fast asleep. 🙂
Take a hot bath or shower.
Taking a bath or shower can help take the stresses of the day off your shoulders and help to relax you. Try adding some bath salts or oils with chamomile, lavender, or even citrus. They have stress relieving/calming effects for body and mind.
