How to Get a Good Night’s Sleep

how-to-get-a-good-nights-sleep

I’m not going to say I’m an expert at sleeping but let’s just say if sleeping were a sport, I’d totally have a medal by now… 🙂 Napping/sleeping (when I’m able to) is a favorite pass time of mine. Here are some tips I use to be able to rest peacefully and incessantly through the night.

Start using your electronics in a better way.

A problem I often have is that I love playing with my phone at night. Because my brain works like a radio that’s on scan mode, it bounces from one idea to the next and doesn’t want to settle down. Whenever this happens, I open an app called “Sleepy Sounds” and let the sounds of streams or nature lull me to sleep. This app is perfect because it has different sounds for both adults and children and it’s extremely relaxing. 🙂 Instead of focusing on my troubles I picture myself in a meadow or by the ocean. One of my absolute favorites.

Cuddle.

Cuddling releases a hormone called oxytocin which causes relaxation because it reduces stress and anxiety responses in your brain.  So, next time you need to ease your mind, get your cuddle on. If you don’t have a significant other, you can always cuddle with your furry friends. 🙂 Pets have been shown to lower stress levels in people as well.

Buy some new bedding.

I can’t tell you how much bedding and other elements of your bed can do wonders for your sleep. On my bed I currently have a 4 inch mattress topper that feels like a cloud! I bought it for about $100 at my local home goods store and it’s been a huge asset for me. Not only is it comfortable, but I don’t have back issues when I’m sleeping on it. I have a pinched spine sometimes and I never have issues when I’m sleeping on my topper. It’s a cheaper alternative to buying a brand new mattress.

Another thing that is great is investing in a nice pillow and blankets/sheets. Before I really knew about thread counts, I had very cheap, rough sheets, blankets and pillow cases. My husband talked me into buying some better ones with a higher thread count and I wish I had done it sooner! I can’t tell you how extremely soft and comfortable my bedding is now. Think about how when you’re at a nice hotel, you get the best sleep of your life. The same can happen when you invest in some comfortable bedding.

Along with a great set of bedding I have a memory foam pillow that conforms to my neck. I’ve never been able to sleep with a flat pillow. I love having one that my head sinks into and that can align my body where it needs to be when I’m sleeping.

Adjust the temperature.

Whether you like it cold or warm in your room, set your thermostat to a comfortable temperature. If the air in your room feels too dry, you can add a humidifier which will make it easier to breathe at night.

Avoid Sodas.

Nothing can ruin sleep like a big glass of caffeinated soda. Instead of grabbing for that Mountain Dew you’ve been craving for, apt for a warm soothing hot chocolate or tea instead. Instead of being wide awake half the night, you’ll be fast asleep. 🙂

Take a hot bath or shower.

Taking a bath or shower can help take the stresses of the day off your shoulders and help to relax you. Try adding some bath salts or oils with chamomile, lavender, or even citrus. They have stress relieving/calming effects for body and mind.

There you have them.. my sleep tips that will have you sleeping soundly through the night. Let me know what your sleep tips are.

Ciao!!

I can’t sleep without my app called “rain rain” playing. I don’t know why but the sound of rain is so relaxing! x

Oooh yes! 🙂 Seriously, that mattress topper is amazing! Also, you wouldn’t believe how soft new sheets and pillow cases are. The higher the thread count, the more it’ll feel super soft and smooth.

I’ve started turning the brightness right down on my laptop if I’m still on it within an hour of when I’m going to bed and that’s really helped! xx

These are good suggestions, except that the cat doesn’t cooperate with sleeping with me. I cuddle my stuffed bears and fall asleep and remember that, tomorrow, I will paint another picture of a stuffed bear and I will continue my story… but today is ending and tomorrow doesn’t start until I wake up. My problems and thoughts still exist but I can’t do anything about them at bedtime so I just go right to sleep. These are all great ideas for someone who has trouble sleeping.

Hahaha! Cats never want to cooperate — do they? That’s awesome lol. Hopefully the sound machine will work for you or even keeping it chilled in your room a bit.

Sound machines are awesome! We also like it cold so we run a fan still in the winter. If it’s too hot we are not sleeping! Thanks for the wonderful tips!

Yes, definitely!! 🙂 I love them. My husband keeps it cold at night with the fan or air but luckily the blankets keep me toasty lol. It’s a good mix

Great advices! To adjust the temperature is something I learned. Fresh air and little colder suits me. Me and my baby use to listen to “Sleep baby sleep” when we take a nap. It is nature sounds combined with soft piano music. Very relaxing. I found your blog at the Bohemian Blog Hop. Shared your post!

Thanks so much, girl! 🙂 I agree. I tend to sleep much better with colder air for sure or even just a fan. I actually had the sleep baby sleep app on my phone but never used it! Lol. It was mainly for getting asleep this cute little 8 month old I babysat. Thanks for checking out my post!

I have tried sheets with 1200 thread count before and for me it’s almost too soft. I like my sheets a little on the crisper side. Is that weird? Lol!

Haha! Hey, everyone likes different things. I see what you mean.. a little bit more rough. My husband likes the mattress to be more firm and I like in between soft and medium — it’s all a balance. lol 🙂
